PSL is a research university created by 20 prestigious institutions that joined together with the common desire to vie with the greatest universities around the world.
These 20 institutions offer exceptional diversity while sharing a common culture based on scientific excellence and the very high potential of their students.
Founding PSL was the response to their shared ambition to create convergences among disciplines, give dynamics to innovation and creativity, attract the most talented students, prepare the them to meet the great challenges of tomorrow, and make research a real driver of growth. PSL has moreover been recognized as one of the French government's "Initiatives d'excellence" (Idex) projects.
Within the PSL framework, the École des Arts Déco and five of the most senior and prestigious institutions of the French cultural and academic landscape (Conservatoire national supérieur d'Art dramatique, Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, la Fémis, and the Ecole normale supérieure) have joined their resources, talents, and experience to implement a PhD program unique in France: SACRe (Sciences, Arts, Creation, Research), which seeks to bring artists, creators, and scientists closer together.
PSL offers a rich and dynamic campus life in the heart of Paris' Latin Quarter: 38 libraries, digital work environments, a doctoral studies center, a chorus and orchestra, and numerous physical and sports activities.
The Paris Sciences et Lettres - Quartier Latin research university is made up of nine founding members and eleven associate members. It was created by ministerial decree in 2010 and has "Foundation for Scientific Cooperation" (FSC) status.
PSL-Formation was also created by ministerial decree, in 2012. Its legal status of "Public Establishment of Scientific Co-operation" (PESC) enables the research university to issue diplomas.
The nine founding members of the Paris Sciences et Lettres - Quartier Latin and PSL-Formation are the Collège de France, the École national supérieure Chimie ParisTech, the École normale supérieure, the École supérieure de physique et de chimie industrielles, the Institut Curie, the Observatoire de Paris, Université Paris Dauphine, the Centre national de la recherche scientifique, and the Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale.
The 11 associate members are the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, the Conservatoire national supérieur d'Art dramatique, the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse, the Institut Louis-Bachelier, the Fondation Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, the Institut national de recherche en informatique et en automatique, Fémis (the École nationale supérieure des métiers de l'image et du son), the Institut de biologie physico chimique (the Fondation Edmond de Rothschild), the École des Mines ParisTech, and the Lycée Henri-IV.
